The Hallstatt Museum showcases 7,000 years of the village’s history, from prehistoric salt mining through the Hallstatt culture to more recent history. The exhibition features archaeological finds, models and multimedia elements. The captions are in German and English.

Is the museum worth a visit?

The museum is well worth a visit if you’re interested in archaeology, salt mining or the history of Hallstatt. It’s also a good option on a rainy day.

Allow around 30–60 minutes for the tour. If you’re only visiting Hallstatt briefly in fine weather, you can skip the museum and focus on the ossuary, the town centre and the Salzberg.

Archaeological excavations beneath the Janu shop

Just a few steps from the museum, you can descend free of charge into the basement of the Dachsteinsport Jana shop. Here you’ll see the remains of structures from prehistoric times, the Roman period and the Middle Ages.

The excavations are accessible during the shop’s opening hours and a tour takes about 10 minutes.
