Marktplatz
Marktplatz is the main landmark in the historic centre of Hallstatt.
You can walk across the square itself in a minute, but in the surrounding area you’ll find a Protestant church, a jetty, a museum, an ossuary and the path to the main photo spot.
Set aside about an hour for a quick stroll through the centre. You could easily spend a whole morning here visiting the ossuary, both churches or the museum.
What can you see at Marktplatz?
This small square is surrounded on all sides by colourful houses with wooden balconies. On the ground floor, you’ll find restaurants, cafés, hotels and souvenir shops.
In the centre stands the Baroque Holy Trinity Column. In 1750, a fire struck the centre of Hallstatt, destroying 35 houses, and a large part of the square had to be rebuilt.
Throughout the year, the Marktplatz is also used for concerts, local festivals and a one-day Christmas market held on 8 December.
How to explore the centre of Hallstatt?
The following route connects the main sights in the centre and can be covered on foot without the need for transport.
- Marktplatz – take in the colourful houses and the Holy Trinity Column
- The Protestant Church and the harbour – it takes just a few minutes to walk from the square to these
- Classic Village Viewpoint – continue along the lake for about 5 minutes to Hallstatt’s most famous viewpoint
- Catholic Church and Ossuary – head back towards the centre and climb the steps to the church, cemetery and ossuary
- Seestraße and the museum – on your way back to the lake, walk through the southern part of the town centre past the museum and the archaeological excavations beneath the Dachsteinsport Jana shop
Without visiting the interiors, the entire circuit takes about an hour. If you’re also planning to visit the ossuary or the museum, allow at least half a day.
Where to eat and shop?
You’ll find several restaurants, cafés and souvenir shops right on the Marktplatz.
These places tend to be at their busiest during the main lunch hour, so it’s worth arriving a bit earlier or postponing your meal until later in the afternoon.
You’ll find more restaurants and small eateries along Seestraße towards the Lahn bus terminal.
Where to stay on Marktplatz?
The Seehotel Grüner Baum is situated right on the square. Some rooms face the lake, whilst others face the Marktplatz, so please check the specific room category when booking.
On the same side of the square, you’ll also find the smaller Seewirt Zauner, which enjoys an excellent location right in the heart of the historic centre.
The Heritage Hotel Hallstatt is situated by the harbour. The rooms are spread across several historic buildings, so please check the location of the specific room type before booking.
