From Ciampino to the centre, you have three public transport options for travelling to the centre of Rome – express buses to the centre at 6 eur, a bus and train combination at 2,70 eur, and a bus and metro combination at 1,50 eur.

Express buses to Termini

The most convenient optionis the direct express buses to the main station, ‘Termini’, which do not stop anywhere else along the route.

There are several operators to choose from, the largest of which isTerravision, followed by Flixbus (which sells tickets for the SIT Bus Shuttle) andRome Airport Bus. All these companies follow the same route.

The cheapest one-way tickets, priced at 7 eur, are sold by Terravision and SIT Bus, whilst the cheapest return tickets, priced at 9,90 eur, are available from Rome Airport Bus. The other two operators offer return tickets priced at 11 eur.

These buses stop at platforms 1 and 2 on the left-hand side at the very back, approximately 100 metres from the arrivals hall.

At Termini station, all operators stop on Via Giovanni Giolitti (at the same stops as those heading to Fiumicino Airport, so make sure you board the correct bus).

ATAC city buses

Taking bus routes 520 and 720to the nearest underground stations is the cheapest way to get to the city centre.

At the airport, they depart from platform 7 in front of the terminal.

• Bus 720 to Laurentina metro station ( Line B ) – runs every 20 to 30 minutes from 5.30 am to 11.30 pm, including weekends 
• Bus 520 to the Cinnecitá + Subaugusta metro station ( Line A) – runs every 15 to 30 minutes from 5.30 am to 11.30 pm, including weekends

The total journey time from Ciampino Airport to the centre of Rome is approximately 75 minutes. The combination of bus 520 and Metro Line A is usually about 10 minutes quicker.

A 100-minute transfer ticket costs 1,50 eur. This ticket will therefore cover the entire journey from the airport to the city centre.

You can also use a 24-hour ticket for 8,50 eur, a 48-hour ticket for 15 euror a 72-hour ticket for 22 eur. Tickets can be purchased at the “Roma” information desk in the arrivals hall.

However, it is much easier to pay using your own contactless card by tapping it on the reader inside the bus (only when boarding) or at the turnstile in the underground. When paying this way, the daily, 2-day or 3-day limits are set at €7, €12.50 or €18 respectively.

Bus + train

An alternative – and often the quickest – option is to take the Trenitalia AirLinkshuttle bus toCiampino station and then a train to Rome’s main station, Termini.

You can 2,70 eur can be purchased on the Trenitalia website, where you can also find the exact timetable, or from a ticket machine in the arrivals hall (in the area with the baggage carousels), or at the station. Make sure you don’t mix up the airports – there are two in Rome: the larger Fiumicino and Ciampino.

Buses from Ciampino station always connect with the train and run every 15 to 40 minutes during the day (at weekends, the interval is up to 75 minutes); you can view the exact timetable on the website: trenitalia.com/ciampino-airlink.

The journey takes 35 to 45 minutes in total.

Taxi

A standard taxi or ride-hailing app to the centre of Rome costs roughly 40 eur.

Taxis are readily available at all hours of the day and night, and the taxi rank is right outside the arrivals hall.

The Uber mobile app is also available in Rome, but even if you select ‘ 40 eur ’, it will only find you standard white taxis, which charge a flat rate from Ciampino Airport.

Cars booked directly through Uber usually cost more – around 55 eur to 60 eur.

Car hire

A car is definitely not recommended for travelling to the centre of Rome; however, if you want to head straight from Ciampino Airport to the countryside or the beaches of the Lazio region, a car is a great choice.

There are many local and major international car hire companies operating right in the terminal. Prices for a week’s hire during the summer season start at 160 eur.

Transport to Fiumicino Airport

Direct services are provided only by Gaspari Bus intercity services, which run at irregular intervals (roughly once every hour or two). The timetable is not displayed anywhere, but the information desk will provide you with departure times. The fare for a single journey is 10 eur and is payable to the driver.

The only other option is to change at the main railway station (Termini). The total journey takes at least 120 minutes. Allow at least4 hours for your connection between flights.
