Transfer at Iqaluit Airport

Nunavuut

The iconic old terminal with its unusual deep yellow façade was replaced in 2017 by a new modern terminal with a red façade and much more passenger-friendly facilities.

The single building is very uncluttered and it's plenty easy to arrive 75 minutes before departure.

Transfer between flights

Iqaluit is a very common transfer point between Canadian North flights from Ottawa/Montreal to destinations further north in Canada.

Thanks to Air Greenland, transfers between Greenland and Ottawa/Montreal also take place here.

Ottawa / Montreal -> destinations further north

Upon arrival, you'll disembark directly into the departure gate area, where you'll be transferred to your connecting flight in no more than 1 minute.

  • Average transfer time - 5 minutes
  • Security check - no
  • Baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically

Destinations North -> Ottawa / Montreal

As there are no security checks at regional airports in Canada's north, but they are required for flights to major airports, you must go through security in Iqaluit.

After you exit the plane, you will go outside to the public area and immediately after that you can proceed through security to the departure gates.

  • Average transfer time - 10-15 minutes
  • Security check - yes
  • Baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically

Canada -> Greenland

Upon exiting the aircraft, go to the public area and collect your baggage, even if it is tagged at the point of departure with a destination only in Nuuk.

Check your bag at the standard Canadian North counters.

Don't worry if the departure boards don't show an Air Greenland flight to Nuuk. Usually only Canadian North flights are shown on the screens.

  • Average transfer time - 30 to 45 minutes
  • Security check - yes
  • Immigration check - no (you never go through exit immigration on departure from Canada)
  • Baggage on transfer - must be collected and re-checked

Greenland -> Canada

When you get off the plane, you will go through a special corridor to Canadian immigration control.

Queues are formed for a maximum of 10 minutes.

After that you will pick up your luggage and check it in at the standard Canadian North counters.

  • Average transfer time - 40 to 55 minutes
  • Security check - yes
  • Immigration check - yes
  • Baggage on transfer - you must collect and re-check in
