Getting from Doha Airport

Doha

Taxis and the metro are the best way to get to and from the airport. Buses are the cheapest mode of transport, but most of them are used only by airport staff.

Taxi / Uber

City taxis are the most used transport to the city centre. The starting fare is 7 qar + 25 qar for the airport, an additional kilometre ride costs 1,6 qar during the day and 1,9 qar at night.

A trip to the lower part of Doha (around Souq Waqif) will cost about 60 qar

Doha City Center, the business district with skyscrapers, can be reached in about 70 qar.

The light green taxis to the airport are operated by a single company, Karwa, and the boarding point is on the left in front of the arrivals hall.

You pay directly to the taxi drivers and can always pay with cash (Qatari riyals only) and regular contactless cards.

The cheaper option is almost always via the Uber mobile app, which works well in Doha. The price to the Souq Waqif area will be around 45 qar and the price to Doha City Center around 50 to 60 qar

Still, the waiting time for a car is longer than for taxis and you can wait up to 15 minutes for an Uber at peak times.

The stand is located at the car rental building opposite the terminal and the route to it is clearly marked.

Metro

Public transport is provided by the Metro Red line, which goes to the city centre and the Corniche area. Official information can be found at qr.com.qa.

The very modern metro system is clear, reliable and fast and is definitely the best value for money when travelling around Doha.

When travelling from the centre to the airport, pay attention to your destination. The line branches off - half the services go to the Al Wakra terminus and half to the airport (Hamad International Airport).

Ticket prices are as follows:

  • 2 qar - one ride
  • 6 qar - all-day

A day ticket is valid for the entire Lusail metro and tram network in Doha. Valid for a given calendar day only and not for 24 hours. Tickets can be purchased from the ticket machine at each station and can be paid by card.

Metro trains run to the airport once every 6 minutes and the journey to the city centre takes about 20 minutes. Metro operating hours vary depending on the day of the week:

  • Last trains - 23:59 Saturday to Wednesday, or 1:00 on Thursday and Friday.
  • First trains - 5:55 Sunday to Thursday, 6:25 Saturday, 2:00 Friday

On Fridays in particular, there are no metro or trams in Doha for the first half of the day and you have to use taxis or buses.

Buses

After the opening of the metro, bus lines do not go to the city centre, but only to the surrounding districts.

The only service that can be used to get into the city is the 757 bus, which goes to the Al Mansoura area south of the old centre. Here you can transfer to other bus lines or to the Green Metro line. The advantage of the 757 is that it runs 24 hours a day at 20 minute intervals (including Fridays).

Lines T612, T613 and L533 only go to the housing estates around the airport and industrial areas and are not usable when travelling to Doha city centre.

Timetables can be found on the carrier's official website: mowasalat.com/Bus-Schedules.

To travel by bus, you must purchase a Karwa Card (see official information) for 10 qar for two rides or 20 qar for unlimited bus travel for 24 hours. The card can be purchased from the vending machine near the exit of the terminal towards the bus stops.

You will find the stops at the right end of the terminal, specifically at booth 3 or 4 called City Bus. Don't ask anyone for directions, no one knows the buses here, everyone drives or takes the subway.

Rent a car

If you want to discover the desert and non-touristy areas of Qatar on your own, the best option is to rent a car.

The building near the metro station houses many large multinational rental companies and 4-day rentals start at 70 eur.
