United Airlines baggage

Baggage rules vary depending on the fare you purchase, but also on the route you are flying.
For example, on flights within the USA and to the Caribbean/Central America, you are only entitled to 1 small personal item in basic economy class.
For official information, visit united.com/baggage.
Hand luggage
A small personal item measuring 43 x 25 x 22 cm is always included on all routes and fares.
An additional standard cabin bag of 56 x 35 x 23 cm is free only in the following cases:
- on all international flights across the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean (i.e. all routes between the USA and Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia/Oceania)
- applies to all fares, including the cheapest Basic Economy fare
- for all other routes (domestic routes within the USA, Central and South America, Canada) it is free on all fares except the cheapest Basic Economy

If you book a single ticket from, for example, Europe to South America or the USA with a connection elsewhere in the USA, you can take 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item on board for free on all flights, even in Basic Economy.
Checked baggage
Checked baggage policy is different for long-haul and domestic flights within the USA + regional international flights to Central America and Canada.
However, checked baggage is never included on the cheapest Economy Basic fare, even on long-haul flights.
In Economy, 1 piece of baggage up to 23 kg is included on international flights to South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Economy Plus | Free 1 piece - Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, South America not included - North and Central America/Caribbean |
Business/First | Free 2 pcs |
If you only want to pay extra for luggage, it's more cost-effective to add the more expensive Economy fare. The price difference is the same as if you were to add baggage separately to the Basic Economy fare, plus you'll earn more frequent flyer miles and be able to choose a specific seat for free.
The price difference between the Basic Economy and Economy fares ranges from 35 usd for shorter flights to 60 usd for long-haul flights.
On domestic flights within the U.S., checked baggage is not included in the Economy fare either - you must always purchase it separately for 40 usd.
Luggage and stroller for children
On all fares, you can carry a stroller and booster seat for free when travelling with children under 2 years old. The pushchair can be taken through security to the aircraft, where it can be handed over to the attendant.
On arrival, you can pick up the pushchair again directly from the aircraft.
A child under 2 years old sitting on your lap is not allowed any additional luggage free of charge.
For children over 2 years old, the same rules apply as for adults.

Hello, we are flying to the USA on United from Munich in April. We will have hand luggage only. Our suitcase size is 55×38 and united only allows 55×35. Do you think the extra 3 cm will be a problem at the checkpoint? Thank you in advance for your reply.
