American Airlines in a nutshell
American Airlines, commonly abbreviated to "American" or "AA", is the world's largest airline by passenger traffic and ranks in the top 3 airlines in the world by number of aircraft.
Their main base is at Dallas-Fort Worth DFW Airport, but there are many other large bases across the US:
- Chicago O' Hare ORD
- Miami MIA
- Philadelphia PHL
- Charlotte CLT
- New York Kennedy JFK
- Phoenix PHX
- Los Angeles LAX
- New York La Guardia LGA
- Washington Reagan DCA
The airline is a member of the oneWorld alliance and has over 1,000 aircraft in its fleet. The largest type operated by American Airlines is the Boeing 777-300.
Another 600 or so aircraft wear American Airlines colors, but flights are operated by a subsidiary, American Eagle, which specializes in short regional routes. We don't describe this airline in a separate guide because the travel conditions or website are identical to parent American Airlines.
