111 West 57th Street

One of New York's most interesting skyscrapers can be found in an area known as Billionaire's Row, home to some of the most expensive apartments in the world. The 111 West 57th Street building is prosaically named after its address and is the world's thinnest skyscraper and the 2nd tallest residential building in the world.

The 10 best hotels in New York City

The skyscraper at 111 West 57th Street opened in 2022.

Although you'll also see the slightly more lilting name "Steinway Tower" in connection with this building, in most cases it's still just an address designation. You'll find 60 luxury condos here, the most expensive of which sold for $66 million. Only residents and their visitors are allowed to enter.

Height and width of the skyscraper

At first glance, the building impresses with its unusually slender shape and strange facade. While the southern wall of the skyscraper gradually recedes towards the top, the northern wall remains straight up to the tip.

At 435 metres , it is the second tallest residential building in the world after the neighbouring Central Park Tower (472 metres).

However, its main characteristic is its extremely slender appearance. The height-to-width ratio is roughly 1:24, making 111 West 57th Street the world's thinnest skyscraper.
