Molokini

Molokini is a small island, originally the top of a crater of a volcano active over 230 000 years ago. It has a crescent shape and a total area of less than 10 hectares, and is of particular interest to lovers of the underwater world.
With the rocky reef protecting part of the sea from the waves and the crystal clear water, it offers the best conditions for snorkelling and diving in all of Hawaii.
Snorkeling and diving
The seabed in Molokini Bay is dotted with colourful coral reefs that drop steeply into the depths. This makes for an ideal spot for a leisurely day's snorkelling and diving.
The water here is so clear that the clear visibility is around 46 metres and the depth for diving in the permitted area is around 15 metres.
The best viewing conditions are in the early morning hours after full dawn when the water is calmest, but it is protected from treacherous currents and large waves all day.
Over 250 different species of the most colourful fish live on the nearly 100-metre deep reef, and you may also come across turtles or rays.
How to get there
The island itself is uninhabited and its mainland is more or less inaccessible, so the only way to get to Molokini is with an organized tour from one of Maui's many tour operators. Molokini is about 4 km off the coast of Maui and the cruise to get there takes about 20 minutes.
And how much does such a trip cost?
A snorkeling trip, which lasts between 3 and 5 hours and includes snorkeling gear rental and refreshments, costs about 150 usd for an adult. Examples of agencies:
A snorkeling trip is logically more expensive, and it depends on whether you are a complete beginner or a more experienced diver, as well as how many dives you take. Generally, a beginner introduction costs around 250 usd + a 3 dive trip between 200 usd and 250 usd per person. Examples of agencies:
