Kokee State Park

Koke'e State Park is a protected nature preserve in the upper reaches of the spectacular Nā Pali coastline and offers some of Kauai's most spectacular views.
Kokee State Park rises to elevations of over 1,000 feet, with mountains literally rising from the depths of the ocean.

Unique scenery, unique sensations
In Koke'e, you literally step into another dimension of being. Breathtaking mountain ranges plummet miles deep to drown in the Pacific Ocean. The mountains are jagged with ravines and the absence of main roads or villages is almost mystical.
Although the Napali Coast is largely inaccessible except by foot, there are still roads leading into the national park, so you can enjoy the incredible views without a long hike. And where do you find the best viewpoints?
- Pu’u O Kila Lookout (see map) - the highest and furthest point that can be reached by car opens up views of the ocean across a wide valley
- Kalalau Lookout (see map) - the most famous viewpoint right on the road with a large parking lot and stunning views of the ocean thousands of feet below you
A hiker's paradise
Koke'e State Park is Kauai's largest hiking paradise. Marked hiking trails always start at the road, so you can easily drive to them, choosing from a variety of long and challenging routes.
The treks usually range from about 3 to 12 km and usually require a return trip along the same route. Most of them are classified as moderately difficult and can be done even by less trained hikers provided they wear good footwear.
Accommodation
Right in the heart of Koke'e National Park, amidst the rolling hills, stay in beautiful forest cabins with all the necessary facilities at The Cabins at Kokee, which are easily accessible by car.
The nearest town to the Koke'e Coast is Waimea in the south, where a road leads to the upper parts of the national park. Much more capacity can then be found to the south in Lihue.
Entrance to Koke'e - fees
If you take the 550 road by car, you have to pay a fee 5 usd per person + 10 usd per car (parking fee). You also need to pay a camping fee if you stay in the countryside, which is 30 usd per night.
Official information is available at dlnr.hawaii.gov/kokee-state-park.
Pay the fee at the machine in the parking lot at the entrance to the park near the Kokee Natural Museum.
