La Rambla
Barcelona offers a range of interesting places to visit, and one of the most fascinating is undoubtedly the city’s most famous street, La Rambla, which begins at Port Vell and ends at Plaça de Catalunya.
This bustling 1.2 km-long street captivates virtually everyone who visits it. It is not just a pleasant stroll that makes for a unique experience, but above all the hustle and bustle that takes place along it. Day and night, La Rambla is teeming with vendors, artists, living statues and various street performances.
The street is sometimes referred to as “Las Ramblas”.
A bustling shopping boulevard
La Rambla is one of the world’s most famous city streets and is the lively lifeline of central Barcelona. It connects the large Plaça de Catalunya square with the harbour, where it ends with a massive monument to Christopher Columbus.
La Rambla is a paradise for those who love a bustling atmosphere, with shopping in small shops of all kinds, ranging from luxury clothing to inexpensive souvenirs.
However, La Rambla is particularly renowned for its cafésof all kinds and sizes, as well as its excellent local restaurants serving traditional Catalan tapas. Prices here are just as reasonable as anywhere else in Barcelona.
Strolls by day, lively revelry by night
Even if you don’t want to pop into a restaurant or shop right on La Rambla, it’s definitely worth walking down at least part of the street. The wide central reservation is lined with mature plane trees, amongst which runs a broad pavement full of benches.
At night, La Rambla transforms into a lively, brightly lit thoroughfare with plenty of street performers, stalls selling food, drink and souvenirs.
What should you not miss on La Rambla?
The street is lined with plenty of interesting sights and famous landmarks, as are the surrounding areas. You certainly shouldn’t miss the following:
- Mercat de la Boqueria – Barcelona’s largest and oldest market, with its impressive steel structure
- Café de l’Opera– one of Barcelona’s most famous bars, with a history dating back to the 19th century
- Hotel Oriente– a famous hotel building dating back to the 17th century, when it served as a Franciscan monastery
- Placa Reial– a hidden gem of a square with arcades running all the way round its perimeter, situated just a few metres from La Rambla
- Gran Teatre del Liceu– a magnificent opera house, the most famous in Barcelona, which has been in operation since 1847
Accommodation in the area
La Rambla is one of Barcelona’s main hubs, and there is a huge concentration of sights within a 3 km radius. This is one of the reasons why this area is ideal for accommodation.
Bear in mind, however, that hotel prices here are the highest in the whole of Barcelona.
