Weather in Riga and best time to go

Riga

Riga has a typical humid continental climate. So you can expect grey days with mild temperatures practically from autumn to spring. In contrast, summers will be sunny with endless long days.

Winter

Winter is usually accompanied by persistent snow cover. Snowfall often starts as early as late November, but the heaviest snow falls from December to February. On average 24 cm per month.

Temperatures are generally mild at around -3 °C, but temperatures below -20 °C are not uncommon on the coldest days, especially at night.

Expect much shorter days in winter. The sun starts to set here after 4 pm.

Spring

The spring months will be literally enchanting thanks to the ubiquitous greenery and parks. Temperatures will be around 13°C in March, but will reach 20°C in April and even 26°C in May. On average, however, expect temperatures between 18 and 21 °C.

High cloud cover and possible showers are to be expected for about a third of the month.

Summer

From June to August, you can enjoy countless sunny days in Riga. The sun will be visible in the sky from early morning to late evening thanks to the proximity of the Arctic Circle.

If you're lucky enough to get temperatures over 30°C, take a trip to the local beach in Jūrmala.

Even in summer, however, you should expect more frequent showers, but these rarely turn into more persistent showers or even thunderstorms.

Autumn

Summer temperatures persist in the following months, especially in September and October you will still be warm enough. The break in daytime temperatures comes in November, when it can cool rapidly from 15°C to zero Celsius.

Paradoxically, the autumn months are not as rainy. You just have to allow for possible snowfall towards the end of November.

When to go to Riga

When to travel to Riga? It doesn't really matter, or rather it depends on your preferences.

Spring offers empty streets and sights. The parks will not be in bloom in early spring and you need to allow for shorter days.

Summer is ideal for combining urban tourism with beach activities in nearby Jūrmala. Thanks to the extremely long days, you will enjoy your stay to the full.

Autumn will offer cheap airfares and hotels and colourful parks.

Winter is picturesque if you're lucky enough to find snow-covered streets and houses. Ideally, plan your visit around the Christmas markets. But this period is redeemed by the shortest days of the year.
