If you have a few spare hours in Hiroshima, head to the small island of Ujina near the harbour, which you can reach on foot or by bus.

Ujina is a small, peaceful island with a lovely walking trail around its perimeter, several small sandy beaches, a lighthouse and beautiful views of the sunset.

Walks around the island

Although there are sandy beaches on the western side of the island, they are small and lack any facilities; Ujina Island is therefore more of a destination for easy, short walks offering lovely views of the bay and its many other islands.

A footpath runs the entire length of the island and is about 2.5 km long in total; see the route map.

At the southern tip of the island, you can follow a forest path up to the white lighthouse. However, it stands in dense woodland and there are no views from there.

How to get there

Bus route 21runs to the island from Hiroshima’s main railway station, although some services from the city centre terminate at Hiroshima Harbour.

Bus route 21 runs directly to the island (the final stop is called Prince Hotel) approximately 2–3 times an hour. The journey from the city centre takes about 40 minutes.

From Hiroshima Harbour, you can walk to the island in about 15 minutes, or during the day you can also take the ferry from Hiroshima, which stops at Ujina Island on its way to Miyajima or Etajima.
