Torre Salsa is one of Sicily’s wildest beach areas. The nature reserve lies between the towns of Siculiana and Eraclea Minoa, west of Agrigento.

Along the 6 km stretch of coastline, wide sandy beaches, dunes, wetlands and white marl and gypsum cliffs alternate. It is therefore not a single continuous 6 km-long beach.

In my opinion, Torre Salsa is better than the better-known Scala dei Turchi if you want to spend a whole day by the sea. However, you must be prepared for a rough access road and a complete lack of facilities.

Beaches and swimming

The most easily accessible beach is located below the Pantano entrance. It is wide, sandy and entry into the sea is mostly gentle. You don’t need water shoes on the main beach.

Most people stay close to the access road. If you walk 10 to 20 minutes along the coast, you’ll easily find a much quieter spot. However, even Torre Salsa isn’t completely deserted during summer weekends.

Towards the white cliffs, the sand gives way to low rocks. These sections are more interesting for snorkelling. The eastern and most remote part of the coast is also used by naturists.

The beach is exposed to the wind and unprotected from the waves. When the sea is calm, swimming is suitable even for children, but there are no lifeguards anywhere.

How to get there by car

For your first visit, we recommend the Pantano entrance. Do not simply enter ‘Torre Salsa Beach’ into your sat-nav. It may direct you down a private or impassable road.

From Agrigento and Scala dei Turchi, take the SS115 towards Sciacca. From Sciacca, follow the same road towards Agrigento. Take the exit signposted Montallegro – Torre Salsa.

First, set your sat-nav to:

• car park at Torre Salsa beach

From the SS115, you’ll drive for about 3.3 km along local roads. At the sign for the Pantano entrance, turn left onto a 2.4 km-long unpaved track. This section takes about 15 minutes.

In dry conditions, even small cars can usually manage the track. Drive very slowly and watch out for potholes. A higher-clearance vehicle is an advantage, but four-wheel drive is not essential.

Do not drive on this track after heavy rain. The Pantano area can become flooded and there is a risk of getting stuck on the muddy track. If you’ve hired a car, also check that your insurance covers unpaved roads. You can find further advice in the chapter on Car Hire in Sicily.

The car park at the entrance to Pantano costs 6 eur per car for the whole day. Payment is in cash. It’s a 15-minute walk from the car park to the beach.

Other access options

If you don’t want to drive all the way to the beach, you can use the private car park with a seasonal shuttle bus.

The minibus runs between the upper car park and the beach from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm. Booking is advisable in summer and at weekends.

Another option is to drive along the tarmac road to Bovo Marina beach and continue on foot along the coast heading east. You’ll avoid the rough track, but you’ll face a longer walk on the sand with no shade.

The Eremita and Cannicella entrances are best used for walking tours and visiting the more remote parts of the reserve.

Admission, opening hours and facilities

Entry to the nature reserve and the beaches is free, and no booking is required. There are no standard year-round opening hours.

You won’t find any bars, restaurants, toilets, showers, bin bins or sun lounger hire on the beaches. Make sure to bring:

• at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water per person
• food for the whole stay
• a parasol or other means of providing your own shade
• sun cream
• cash for parking
• sturdy footwear if you wish to continue along the trails

Please take all your rubbish back with you. Do not enter the dunes or approach the marked Caretta caretta turtle nests.

Is Torre Salsa suitable for children?

Yes, but only if you come well prepared. On the main sandy beach, the seabed generally slopes gently. The problem is the lack of shade, toilets, refreshments and lifeguard supervision.

A pushchair is impractical on the sand or the nature trails. For families with young children, a private shuttle bus is more convenient than travelling by car to the Pantano entrance.

Accommodation near Torre Salsa

Most travellers visit Torre Salsa on a day trip from Agrigento. However, if you’re looking for a quiet part of Sicily and want to spend several days by the sea, stay in Montallegru or Siculiana.

Smaller flats and guesthouses usually cost between 70 and 140 eur per night for two people, depending on the season.

Accommodation in Montallegru near Torre Salsa

Right on the edge of the nature reserve stands the luxurious 5* ADLER Sicilia, featuring a wellness centre, swimming pools and private beach access. Prices generally start at over 400 eur per night for two, but its location makes it the best hotel for a stay near Torre Salsa.

If you want to combine swimming with a visit to the Valley of the Temples and the Scala dei Turchi, Agrigento is a more practical base.

What to combine your visit with

Torre Salsa naturally lends itself as a stop-off on the journey between Agrigento and the town of Sciacca. Also worth visiting in the surrounding area:

• Scala dei Turchi – the famous white cliff and viewpoint
• Agrigento – the town and the archaeological Valley of the Temples

Torre Salsa is well worth at least half a day. We therefore do not recommend trying to squeeze a visit to the beach, Scala dei Turchi and the Valley of the Temples into a single day.
