The Egadi Islands are still a somewhat overlooked archipelago, situated just a few dozen minutes by ferry from Trapani. The three main islands – Favignana, Levanzo and Marittimo – welcome you with a laid-back island atmosphere, beautiful villages and plenty of small, secluded beaches with very few tourists.

The island of Favignana

The largest of the Egadi Islands, Favignana covers an area of almost 20^km²and is the ideal destination for a day trip from Trapani, or even for a stay of several days in peaceful surroundings.

The rugged coastline is dotted with many small rocky and sandy beaches; some have facilities such as parasol hire and bars, whilst others are completely natural and off the beaten track. 

Among the most popular beaches are Cala Rossa, Lido Burrone and Spiaggia di Marasolo, whilst Cala Rotonda is one of the more secluded beaches. Favignana’s beaches are ideal for those seeking peace and tranquillity, with few tourists.

At the westernmost point of Favignana, you can visit the beautiful Faro di Punta Sottile lighthouse.

The island of Levanzo

If Favignana is the ideal place for lovers of peace and quiet, then Levanzo is a veritable paradise. A tiny islet home to just a few dozen people. Its beautifully photogenic, dramatic rocky coastline is punctuated by small, deserted beaches.

Levanzo’s main attraction is theGrotta del Genovesecavewithits Palaeolithic cave paintings, the oldest of which date back to the 10th century BC. Entry to the cave costs 18 eur, and a guided tour costs 37 eur. However, a 4 km walk (one way) awaits you to reach the cave, so sturdy footwear is essential.

The island of Marettimo

The island furthest from Sicily is one of the most beautiful in terms of natural scenery. Steep rocky cliffs plunge deep into the sea, creating a rugged, wild coastline with many stunning views.

At the island’s northernmost point, on a headland, stands Punta Troia Castle. The islet of Marettimo served as an important naval stronghold in ancient Rome, as it controlled all maritime traffic to Spain and North Africa.

Accommodation on the Aegadian Islands

Finding accommodation on the islands is no problem; on the island of Favignana in particular, you’ll even find larger 4* hotels. Prices here are higher than in Sicily, ranging from 2,500 to 144 eur per night for two people. By far the largest number of apartments and hotels can be found on the island of Favignana.

Ferry to the Aegadian Islands

All the islands can only be reached by ferry from Trapani and Marsala, where all ferries dock at the main port right in the town centre.

Two companies operate services to all three islands: the faster catamarans and hydrofoils run by Liberty Lines, and the slower ferries operated by Siremar. Tickets can be bought on the spot at the port or easily online at directferries.com, where you can compare the prices of both companies.
