Head to the foot of Mount Merapi and take a stroll across the Kalikuning tourist bridge, which spans the valley of the same name, featuring numerous man-made waterfalls.

This short walk of around 1.5 km through a mountainous valley with dense forests is a very pleasant change of pace from the hustle and bustle of Yogyakarta and its historical sights.

The bridge is located in the village of Kaliurang, which cannot be reached on foot. Access to the Kalikuning Valley is only possible from the south, coming from Yogyakarta.

Admission fees and opening hours

There is an admission charge to access the bridge and the valley. It is open from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm every day except Mondays.

How to get there

The only way to reach the entrance to the Kalikuning Valley is by car or motorbike. There is no public transport to this area.

We recommend using the Grab or Gojek mobile apps, which work well in this area too.

The journey to the centre of Yogyakarta will cost around 170 000 idr.

You can save a significant amount by taking bus route 12 from the Condogcatur terminal (or the ‘Sardjito’ stop, where you change to routes 3A/3B heading towards the city centre) to the Pakem terminus.

You cannot pay in cash on Route 12 buses; only electronic cards are accepted (see the Transport section), and a ticket costs 3 600 idr.

From the Pakem terminal, take a Grab or Gojek for around 35 000 idr.

The tourist town of Kaliurang

Kaliurang is a very touristy village, where most off-road quad bike and jeep tours – known as the Merapi Lava Tour – begin (see the ‘Activities’ section for more details). However, we do not currently recommend visiting the centre of Kaliurang.

The entrance to Merapi National Park is located by Tlogo Putri Lake in Kaliurang (foreigners pay 175 000 idr), but the only thing accessible is a small waterfall, which is certainly not worth the relatively high price.

All hiking trails in the national park are closed due to Merapi’s ongoing volcanic activity.
