In the underground area, you’ll find railway stations with direct connections throughout Switzerland, and dozens of bus and tram routes serve the surrounding neighbourhoods and towns.

You can reach the centre of Zurich quickly by train without changing, or more leisurely by tram on a scenic journey through the picturesque suburbs.

Immediately upon exiting the arrivals hall, you’ll see screens displaying the current departure times for all trains, buses and trams.

Ticket prices

Ticket prices are the same for all modes of transport. Trains, trams and buses throughout the Zurich area are integrated into a single transport system.

The same fares apply when travelling to Zurich, whether by regional train or long-distance InterCity train.

To travel to the city centre, you will need a 3-zone ticket (zones 110 and 121, with zone 110 counting as two zones).

• 14 chf – 24 hours (for zones 110 + 121)

If you plan to travel extensively within the city of Zurich (zone 110) only, it’s worth buying a single-journey ticket from the airport for 3,40 chf and then a 24-hour ticket for 2 zones for 8,80 chf.

A 24-hour ticket is also available at 6,80 chf, valid for an unlimited number of journeys on the Airport–Zurich route.

Where can I buy tickets?

You can buy tickets from the SBB ticket machine before entering the platform, or from the ZVV ticket machine as you leave the hall on your way to the bus and tram stops.

Train

By far the quickest way to get into the city is by train. The station is located underground between the two terminals.

To travel to the city centre and Zurich Main Station (“Zürich Hauptbahnhof”), you can use regional trains, the “S-Bahn” city trains and InterCity long-distance trains.

Very few services terminate directly in Zurich, so you will usually see another city listed as the destination on the departure boards. Some trains do not go to the centre of Zurich, so be sure to check the second line on the departure board, where ‘Zürich HB’ must be shown for journeys to the centre.

Tram

If you’re travelling to the north of Zurich, the best option is to take tram lines 10 and 12. 

Line 10 goes directly to the city centre, whilst line 12 goes to the eastern suburb of Stettbach.

Trains to Switzerland

Long-distance and regional trains bound for destinations other than Zurich also stop at “Zürich-Flughafen” station.

You can buy tickets in the same way as for journeys to Zurich: from the ticket machines outside the platform entrance or at the SBB information centre.

Local buses

The airport also has a regional coach station, from which coaches run to all the surrounding towns and to the northern suburbs of Zurich.

Tickets are the same as for trains and trams and can be purchased from the ticket machine before entering the relevant platform.

The quickest way to find connections for a specific route is on the website zvv.ch.

Buses usually run at intervals of 15–60 minutes. The first services run between 4.30 am and 6.00 am, and the last services run between 11.30 pm and 12.30 am.

Taxis, Uber

Taxis or the Uber app are the most convenient way to get around for travellers with large bags.

Official taxis operate on a meter and you can always pay by cash or card. There are plenty of taxis waiting at the airport day and night, and the waiting time will be no more than 3 minutes.
