Sapporo New Chitose Airport in a nutshell
The 1991 "New Chitose" airport is the main gateway to the Japanese island of Hokkaido.
Located 50 km south of Sapporo, the island's largest city, it is one of the major aviation hubs of the whole of northern Japan, with many direct international flights in addition to an extensive network of domestic routes - details here.
Due to Sapporo's remoteness from the rest of Japan, the airport has one of the densest domestic traffic in the world. For example, the Sapporo-Haneda route is the 2nd busiest air route in the world.
