Transportation from Macau Airport

Macau

The terminal is well connected to public transport. Many bus lines to central Macau and Taipa Island stop right outside the arrivals hall.

You can also use the elevated station to take the automatic train that runs between the casinos on Taipa Island.

Taxi

The taxi stand is right outside the main exit from the arrivals hall. Taxis are the most popular mode of transport in Macau and are ubiquitous throughout the city day and night.

Taxi drivers always drive according to the meter and unfair prices or even fraudulent behaviour is very rare in Macau.

The Bolt, Grab or Uber mobile apps do not work in Macau.

Taxi payment is possible in cash (Macau Pataca or Hong Kong dollars can be used) or with the city's Macau Pass card, which can be purchased at a 7-Eleven newsagent. Regular credit cards cannot be used in taxis.

Taxi fares are as follows:

  • Boarding fee at the airport - 5 mop
  • First 1,600 metres - 19 mop
  • Every additional 240 metres - 2 mop
  • Extra charge for the journey to Coloane - 2 mop

On average, you will pay the following prices for a taxi from the airport:

Tickets and prices

The fare system in Macau is very simple.

You can always pay 6 MOP into the driver's cash box for each individual ride, regardless of the distance you travel. After paying, you will not get any ticket, so you have to pay again when you change trains 6 mop. You can also pay at a 1:1 rate in Hong Kong dollars.

You can't pay with a regular credit card, you can use the Chinese mobile apps Alipay, MPay or WeChat to pay.

A convenient alternative for tourists is to buy a Macau City Pass.

The Macau Pass card costs 130 mop, while 30 mop is a refundable deposit 100 mop can already be used for regular payment. However, you can also load more money onto the card at the time of purchase and reload at will over time. The card can be used to pay routinely in all shops and many sights, and does not have to be used just for public transport.

To purchase a Macau Pass at the airport, visit the 7-Eleven store on the departures level (1st floor).

To pay for the Macau Pass, just place your card in front of the reader at the driver when you board. The card is no longer attached when you exit. In case of a transfer, the next fare is reduced to 3 mop.

Buses to the docks

Macau has two main ports from where ships sail to Hong Kong.

Taipa port is located about 300 metres from the airport and the quickest way to reach it is by walking (about 10 minutes) or by automatic train (see below).

The port of Macau is directly accessible by bus lines AP1 (daytime) and N2 (nighttime). The journey takes approximately 30 minutes.

Free hotel buses

To the right of the terminal are the stops for the free hotel buses that run at regular intervals from the airport to Macau's major hotels.

These buses are available even if you do not have a reservation at the hotel. In addition to transporting hotel guests, the buses are also intended to bring potential customers to the hotel casinos and are therefore open to all travellers.

Buses run free of charge from the following hotels at the airport. To view room rates, click on the hotel name below.

Automatic train

On the elevated level above the terminal is a station for the automated train, referred to as the LRT (Light Rapid Transit).

However, usage by general tourists is low. The train route heads from the airport to the areas of the large casinos and hotels on Taipa Island, but they offer free transportation to all with their buses. The train goes to the Oceano district, but it is quicker to get there by public transport buses (lines 26 or 36).

The terminus is at Barra Station on Macau Island, but again is quicker to get to by public transport bus (lines 26 or MT4).

It will thus offer meaningful use, for example, on the way to Taipa pier if you don't feel like walking about 300 metres.

  • Frequency - 7 to 10 minutes
  • Operating hours - 6:30 to 23:15 (until 23:59 on Saturdays and Sundays)

You cannot use the Macau Pass on the LRT and must purchase special tickets.

There are ticket machines and manned ticket offices at each station. Prices from the airport are as follows:

  • Taipa Ferry Terminal - 6 mop
  • Cotai East - 6 mop
  • Barra - 12 mop

Transportation to Hong Kong

There are no direct buses from Macau Airport to Hong Kong.

The quickest way to get between the airport and Hong Kong is by regular ferries from Taipa Pier, 300 metres away, which can be reached by walking along the footpath from the terminal or by taking the 1 stop automatic train (per 6 mop).

Ferries to Hong Kong depart approximately every 15-30 minutes. The journey takes 60 minutes and tickets cost 190 MOP.

Timetables, online ticket purchase and other information are available on the websites of the two cruise companies.

The more distant port of Macau is accessible by AP1 bus, but has no advantage for airport travellers. Ticket prices and frequency of the boat service are the same as from Taipa Port.
