Taiwan's second largest city, Kaohsiung, offers travellers a relatively busy international airport 9 km south of the city centre.
Flights to Kaohsiung are mainly from destinations in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and the Philippines.
There is also very heavy traffic on domestic routes to other islands belonging to Taiwan such as Penghu and Kinmen. Most flights are operated by Eva Air and China Airlines. The cheapest tickets are usually offered by low-cost Tigerair Taiwan, which has one of its bases in Kaohsiung.
Significantly more international and long-haul flights head to Taiwan Taoyuan TPE Airport, a 3-hour express train ride from Kaohsiung.
