Ethiopian Airlines check-in
Ethiopian Airlines is one of the airlines that offer free check-in at the airport.
Airport check-in
With Ethiopian Airlines, check-in at the airport counter is free of charge.
The opening and closing times for the check-in desks are as follows:
- Flights to/from the USA and Paris – 4 hours to 60 minutesbefore departure (for departures from Paris, check-in closes 75 minutes before departure)
- Other international flights –3 hours to 60 minutesbefore departure (for evening departures from Addis Ababa to Europe and North America, check-in is available after 13:00 regardless of the departure time)
- Check-in desks at London Heathrow and Manchester airports close 75 minutes before departure
- Domestic flights –2 hours to 45 minutes before departure
At selected airports, you can check in using a self-service kiosk, which allows you to avoid the queue if you are travelling with hand luggage only.
Self-service baggage drop-off counters are also available at Addis Ababa, Buenos Aires, London Heathrow, Madrid and Tokyo Narita airports.
Online check-in
You can check in online from the comfort of your own homebetween 48 hours and 2 hoursbefore departure via the ethiopian.com website.
Online check-in is also available via the Ethiopian mobile app (Google Play / App Store), where you enter your booking reference and present the QR code on your mobile at the airport.
If you are travelling with hand luggage only, you do not need to visit the check-in desk at the airport at all. Proceed straight through security and passport control.
If you are travelling with checked-in luggage, some airports (such as Addis Ababa) have special ‘Web Check-in’ counters, where queues are usually shorter.
Seat selection
Would you like a window seat, or do you prefer an aisle seat on a long flight so that you can stretch your legs undisturbed at any time?
With Ethiopian Airlines, you can choose a specific seatfree of chargeat any time during the booking process, or later in the ‘Manage Booking’ section or when checking in online.

Is it possible to check in part of the luggage 48h before the flight Madrid Addis Ababa? At the airport?
Unfortunately, this is not possible - the airport counter opens 3-4 hours before departure. If departure is after 13:00, you can check in any time after 13:00, but only for that calendar day.
Thank you very much!!! Your info is super useful for me !!!
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but the way there I check in fine, but the way back it doesn't offer me check-in at all, while it's less than 48h.till the departure of the return flight 🤔 did the check-in was done for both directions? That seems like bullshit to me, based on what I'm otherwise used to from other airlines. Can anyone advise please? 🙂
Do you have a return ticket?
I understand you're coming back in 48 hours? Or are you just flying out there? That time is calculated separately for each flight.
I have a return ticket, it's a one day flight there and back. If only they had sent something in the mail to check in, but I didn't get that from them either. Edit: at least I have the check in in the mail for the outbound trip done, but still nothing for the return trip. Doesn't the first part have to be flown through for it to jump in? Otherwise I don't know 🫣 In general their website is one big tragedy, I can check in with Ryanair etc. in 5 seconds, but this is hell 😁
If it's in one flight, then it's logical that it can't. They have to fly the flight there first.
I guess I've never flown there and back in one day 😁 so I hope I can do it then. Thank you
I'm sure you'll be fine, I did it a couple of weeks ago, you have to go there first and after that I had to check in for the return trip. No worries.
Thank you all 👍 I'm just a little bit dumb 😜
Hello, if I check in online, will the QR code on my mobile phone be sufficient when I change planes in Addis Ababa / will I be travelling with hand luggage only / or do I need to collect a paper boarding pass when I leave Vienna? Thanks for your reply
