Byodo-In Temple

Byodo-In Buddhist Temple is a very popular tourist destination when traveling around the island of Oahu. It is a replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan, which was built in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to the Hawaiian Islands.

Valley of the Temples Memorial Park
Byodo-In Temple is the largest and most visited structure in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, which lies at the base of the Ko'oalu Mountains on Oahu's east coast. Memorial Park was built in 1963 as a tribute to the respect and tolerance of all the major religions of the peoples who immigrated to the Hawaiian Islands.
The main attraction is the Buddhist Byodo-In with a 2.7 meter high statue of Buddha lying on a lotus leaf.
In addition to the Buddhist Byodo-In, you can visit a Catholic or Protestant chapel or a Shinto shrine in the Valley of the Temples.
Entrance fees and opening hours
You can enter the Valley of the Temples at any time and for free, but you can also visit the interior of the Byodo-In Temple at the following times:
- Daily 8:30am-4:30pm (last entry at 4:15pm).

How to get there
Byodo-In Temple is located near the town of Kaneohe about 22 miles from Honolulu on a convenient road. You can park for free right on the Valley of the Temples grounds.
Alternatively, you can take a bus to the intersection with the main road about 400 meters from the temple. Line 65 (Honolulu, Kaneohe) stops here.
