The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is the most famous gallery of modern art, predominantly of the abstract school. It is the first in a series of museums run by the Guggenheim Foundation, which are now located all over the world.

The Guggenheim Museum’s collections

The main part of the exhibition is the original collection of Solomon Guggenheim, who focused primarily on interwar artists working in the abstract style, the majority of whom were French.

The museum building

The building that houses the Guggenheim Museum is also a real eye-catcher. This modernist structure was built between 1956 and 1959 and was designed by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The internal ramp, which has no supporting columns, was designed by civil engineer Jaroslav Josef Polívka.

The curved and relatively low cylindrical structure contrasts sharply with the surrounding landscape of rectangular skyscrapers, and despite being literally dwarfed by them, it stands out from afar thanks to its innovative design and white façade.

Admission and opening hours

The Guggenheim Museum’s opening hours are as follows:

• Wednesday–Friday and Sunday–Monday: 11:00–18:00
• Saturday: 11:00–20:00
• Tuesday: closed
• Last admission is always 30 minutes before closing time

Ticket prices vary according to age group:

• 30 usd – adults aged 12 and over
• 19 usd – over-65s and students with an ISIC card
• Free – children under 12

Free entry on Sundays

Every Sunday between 4.00 pm and 5.30 pm, admission is by voluntary donation; however, you must book your ticket online. Tickets go on sale at 10.00 am on the day and usually sell out within a few minutes.

How to get to the museum?

The Guggenheim Museum is located on 5th Avenue, right next to Central Park. Bus routes M1, M2, M3 and M4 stop right outside the museum.

The nearest underground station,86th Street, is670 metres south-east of the entrance and is served by the green lines 4, 5 and 6.
