Makalawena Beach

A series of deserted beaches can be found just north of Kona Airport. They are the ideal place for a last rest before departure.
The area of black fields of old solidified lava extending into the sea is now and then highlighted by a beautiful beach with fine white sand and a few green palm trees, which resembles an oasis in the middle of a dry desert.
The cheapest accommodation on the Big Island
The most famous beach on this coast is Makalawena Beach, but on the way you can stop at the similarly smaller Mahai'ula Beach. Both, however, have in common low footfall, beautiful surroundings and always plenty of privacy and tranquillity.
Don't look for any facilities, restaurants or sunbed or umbrella rentals. Only at Mahai'ula Beach are there free public toilets by the car park.
It is to Mahai'ula Beach that the tarmac road leads from the main Queen Ka'ahuman Hwy roundabout. However, you have to walk to Makalawena Beach on a gravel road (about 700 meters one way from the parking lot).
