Train
Manchester city centre is the quickest to reach by train, which is both the busiest and cheapest form of transport.
The terminus is centrally located between Terminals 1 and 2, reached by a clearly signposted pedestrian passage.
All direct trains run from the airport to one of the main Manchester Piccadilly stations. Some services continue on to Oxford Road, Deansgate or Manchester Victoria stations.
Timetables and online ticketing can be found on the website thetrainline.com, which compares all rail operators in the UK.
Tickets on the door cost 6,20 gbp. When bought online in advance for some services from 1,45 gbp. Tickets online via the web thetrainline.com You can buy in three ways:
- Advanced Single with the lowest price - can only be used for a specific connection
- Off Peak Day Single - can be used on all off-peak trains (typically over midday or later in the evening)
- Anytime Day Single - any connection on a given date, the most expensive tickets, priced between 4,30 gbp and 6,20 gbp
Trains run at intervals of 3-12 minutes and will get you into Manchester city centre at Piccadilly station in 15-20 minutes depending on the number of stops.

Tram (Metrolink)
You can also use the "Navy" tram line to get to the nearby area and the city centre. The journey is quick as the tracks are off the road and trams have priority at all traffic lights. However, the distance to the city centre by tram is over 50 minutes, so it is preferable to use the train.
The airport is in zone 4, so you need a single ticket for 4,60 gbp or a day ticket for 7,10 gbp to get to the centre.
On weekends from Friday 18:00 until the end of Sunday service you can buy a weekend ticket for 6,80 gbp. This ticket is valid for trams only.
Just in case you want to take more than one tram or bus around Manchester on the day of your departure or arrival, taking the tram from the airport is worthwhile. The day ticket is not valid on trains.
Simply pay for your ticket by attaching your card to the reader at the tram stop before you get on and after you get off. Alternatively, you can buy a standard paper ticket from a machine.

Public transport buses and night services
The last option for transport to Manchester is local public transport buses. The bus journey is more suited to the outlying districts (for accommodation, for example) as the total journey time to Manchester city centre will be 70 minutes or more.
However, buses are the only all-night transport option.
Ticket prices are the same as for trams: 4,60 gbp to the centre (until the end of 2026 only 2 gbp) / 7,10 gbp all-day. For shorter journeys around the airport, a single zone ticket for 1,40 gbp, a maximum of 2 zones for 2,40 gbp is sufficient.
For travel to Manchester city centre the following routes are suitable. Click on the line number to see the map and timetable.

Taxi / Uber
Taxi traffic is strictly meter-driven and any fraud on foreigners is extremely rare.
There are different fares during day (6am-10pm) and night (10pm-6am) hours.
The exact price of a ride can never be determined in advance because the fare combines the distance travelled with waiting time, for example in traffic jams or at traffic lights.
- Starting rate: 2,30 gbp during the day / 2,80 gbp at night
- Every 163.6 metres travelled: 0,20 gbp (at night, 20p for every 122.9 metres)
- Standing: 0,20 gbp every 38.39 seconds
The average cost of a night journey from the airport to Piccadilly station is around 30 gbp.
Lower prices are offered by Uber, for which you can pay between 20 gbp and 30 gbp, depending on current demand.

The train at GBP 3.20 is not the cheapest form of transport from the airport when the bus costs GBP 2. It can be bought on the Stagecoach app. https://play.google.com/store/ap...gecoachbus
True, I have. Unfortunately it will only last until the end of 2024, from January the government subsidy for the lowest price local bus ticket will be reduced and a maximum price of £6 will apply.
Thanks for the quick update. However, I would really add links to the apps as well, since paying by card is great in theory, but in practice the card may not always work everywhere (happened to us on bus 43 with Revolut, and this is not the first time this has failed me on public transport abroad - plus no error message, nothing in the statement, just suddenly not working).

The train is the cheapest way to get to Manchester if you buy a non-refundable ticket in advance for a specific service from £1.45. The flat price of a bus ticket at £2 applies in 2026.
Look out for the £5 day bus ticket, which is valid until 3:59pm. If you arrive in Manchester after midnight and want to ride it into the city and then ride it all day, you're out of luck.
The buses do run all night, but if you arrive in the city centre from the airport at, say, 3am and want to continue on to somewhere on the edge of town, you may find yourself waiting for another bus for up to 2 hours.
There's no mention of the weekend tram pass for GBP 6.80, which is valid from Friday evening.
Trams run until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. The last tram from the airport leaves shortly after 1pm on these days.

You can get an Uber or Bolt from the airport to the city centre at night for £20.
You can also get to Liverpool by Flixbus for around 100 CZK.
Thanks for the update!
The Flixbus to Liverpool has consistently low prices even at the last minute, and most importantly, it is free (i.e. for the price of a booking - 9 CZK) to cancel, which cannot be said about the National Express. For other destinations there is no mention of Flixbus at all, but it also runs cheaply from the airport to other cities in GB, e.g. to the mentioned Leeds and Birmingham or even to London.
There is also no mention in the text of the ability to buy tickets on apps:

Please, does anyone have a more recent and better experience regarding transportation to and from the airport than A had?
These will be completely random, like the A's. I've been two or three times and everything was running and working as it should.
Thank you very much.
If you are travelling to the airport by tram and have some time to spare, you can stop off at the Wythenshawe Town Centre shopping oasis on the way.
