We travelled from the terminal in a pre-booked taxi – we wanted to get to Bacalar as quickly as possible.

However, it’s also easy to travel by taking a taxi to nearby Chetumal and then an ADO bus from there, by train directly from the terminal, or by hiring a car right at the airport.

Taxi

Traditional taxis, as we know them from the USA, Europe or major Mexican cities, are not usually found at Chetumal Airport.

Occasionally, a few are waiting outside the terminal, but they’re usually snapped up quickly.

We booked a shared transfer via Chetumaltours.com. On arrival, we had to find the counter and collect our voucher, but everything went smoothly.

If you haven’t booked a transfer in advance, you can arrange one on arrival, but bear in mind that you may have to wait more than 20 minutes for a free car.

Do Uber, Bolt and Cabify operate in Chetumal?

No. You cannot use any of the ride-sharing apps to get from Chetumal Airport.

Uber only operates in the Bacalar area.

The Tren Maya train

Chetumal Aeropuero railway station is situated about 400 metres from the airport terminal and can be reached on foot via the footpath.

Modern trains run from Chetumal directly to the following destinations: Bacalar, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancún.

At the moment, however, there are only 2–3 services a day, so you’ll need to be lucky for the train to connect with your flight.

Car hire

It’s worth hiring a car in Chetumal if you don’t just want to visit the Seven-Coloured Lagoon in Bacalar, but would also like to explore the Mayan ruins and other natural attractions in the surrounding area.

A car is definitely the most practical option.

There are several international car hire companies based at the terminal.

Prices during the peak season for a 4-day hire range from 3 300 mxn.
