All the check-in desks and the arrivals area are on the ground floor, whilst security checks and the departure gates are on the first floor.

You can view an interactive map of the terminal on the airport’s official website.

Bologna Airport is one of the busiest of all the European airports we have visited. Whilst security checks are well organised and there are no long queues, the transit area is very cramped with an extreme shortage of seating.

Changing flights

Bologna is not a typical transit airport, and in the vast majority of cases you will have to arrange your own connections.

If you already have a boarding pass for your connecting flight and are travelling with hand luggage only, there is no need to leave the transit area.

From the baggage reclaim area, stairs lead directly to the departure gates. There is no security check. However, this rule only applies to passengers arriving from a Schengen country.

If you are arriving in Bologna from a country outside the Schengen Area, you must always go through passport control and exit the transit zone completely.
