ATMs and currency exchange

The currency exchange offices in the arrivals hall are open 24/7. Although the electronic displays only show the ‘We Buy’ option – which may look a little suspicious – the exchange rates at the airport’s currency exchange offices are the same as those at all banks in the city.

ATMs belonging to several Ethiopian banks, which also accept international cards without any problems, are located in the baggage reclaim area, i.e. in the transit zone.

Do not exchange more birr than you need.

According to government regulations, Ethiopian birr cannot be exchanged back into foreign currency.

Shops and supermarkets

In the public arrivals hall, you will only find shops run by local mobile network operators, where you can buy data SIM cards.

The public area of the departures terminal contains only information desks.

In the transit area near the departure gates, you’ll find severalduty free shops, as well as shops selling local produce and souvenirs.

In the departure gate area, you can also make use of the services of a pharmacy, which is open 24/7.

Shopping options at Addis Ababa Airport are generally very limited.

Dining options

There are no restaurants in the public area of the airport.

However, the transit area near the departure gates offers plenty of places to eat. There are cafés, pubs and fast-food outlets such as Burger King and Pizza Hut.

Most restaurants remain open 24/7.

Showers

If you do not have access to a premium lounge or hotel and would like to freshen up with a shower between long flights, please make use of the Wellness & Spa facility in the transit area.

The price for a shower is 15 usd for 15 minutes.

It is open 24/7.

If you’re travelling with Ethiopian Airlines and would like to head into town during a long layover, make use of the free transit hotel, where you can leave your luggage.

You can also conveniently fill your own bottle with drinking water here.
