I have a ticket for a domestic flight in Chile at the Full fare.
How much baggage can I take with me as a Frequent Traveller with Miles and More?
Hey. Hey. On my RTW I'm dealing with little things that save a ton of money. I need to not fly two segments on two routes. First Auckland- Santiago- Lima (the one to Lima, saving approx. From Santiago I want to buy straight to Cuzco for similar money with an overnight in Santiago. Second flight Cuzco- Lima- Bogota- Medellín (not to fly the last segment, saving about 3,5 compared to direct flight Cuzco-Bogota). Will it be ok? 😁😀 Another thing is the luggage. The fare with carry-on is 70usd more expensive than with small luggage, but the en route penalty for oversize is 50 usd. 😀 Probably better to skip the small luggage... (I fly with about 5kg 20l backpack).
"I want to buy from Lima straight to Cuzco for similar money with an overnight stay in Santiago."
What do you want to buy? LIM-CUZ or LIM-SCL-CUZ?
I'm an idiot. It was supposed to be from Santiago to Cuzco (I'm not flying Santiago-Lima).
I think it should be OK.
During my first and last RTW in 2019, I also had these tails forfeited to save money:
Latam: CDG-GRU-EZE-LIM-ASU-LIM-(-GRU-CDG not flown);
Avianca: LIM-BOG-MEX-(-SAL not flown);
I would not purchase baggage.
You should be able to fit into the dimensions with a backpack. Or you can pull it down with a drawstring with plastic hooks.
Both flights are with LATAM? Are you gonna tell them you're sick? It's probably unlikely to go through, but if they see in the system that you have another ticket with them the next day, they might see it as circumventing their fare policy. Probably like the famous case with Lufthansa where the other ticket was with the same airline.
I hope the luggage meets the dimensions. I flew LATAM to the Galapagos with about a 25 litre full bag and they didn't check anyone. I haven't seen checks on other flights with other airlines in Latin America in recent months either, and if there was a cage anywhere, it was far from the gate.
In the first case, Auckland- Santiago- Lima, I'm doing it mainly because the previous flight is very long and would be followed by a 4hr connection and another 4hr flight. Of course the price difference was also quite big. And yes, I'll be taking a second day ticket with LATAM Santiago- Cuzco as well (I'll save a segment, shorten the trip, have a full day and night in Santiago and save about a triple). And I would tell them the truth. I changed my travel plans, they probably can't force me on a plane. The other case was to either buy Cuzco- Bogota with Avianica for 8, or Cuzco-Lima-Bogota- Medellín for less than half that. For the last segment, I'm thinking of dropping BID (it's 9usd there) to premium economy, and then I can still go to Latam Lounge in Bogota for dinner 😀 (but this joke probably won't work)
Maybe someone more knowledgeable will comment on this, but I've noted in the past in discussions here (I have no experience with this and don't follow other ticket discussions) on this topic that not boarding a connecting flight on a classic airline needs to be excused by some slight temporary health problem or something similar. They certainly won't force you onto the plane, but they might want to make up the difference. The question is how they would force you. Unless they deny you boarding until you pay. That's why it would be fine if you flew another airline afterwards. And of course you shouldn't tell them you bought it that way with the intention of saving money. The fact that the flight is too long is understandable, but irrelevant from that perspective.
They have a pricing policy that makes international direct flights (maybe even domestic) significantly more expensive than connecting ones. It makes sense (from a profit maximization perspective) because many people are willing to pay more money for a more comfortable and faster direct flight.
If you'd been in that Santiago for more days, you could at least say that you changed your travel plans after you bought the ticket (hopefully not within a few days of buying it, if you already had), that you wanted to visit something or someone there that you didn't know before you bought the first ticket. Moving up a day or maybe just a night doesn't help that explanation. But I really have no idea if they handle such cases in practice. I'm just writing that if they want to, it might turn out differently than you imagine.
