The Grandezza Hotel Luxury Palace is one of the best-known hotels in Brno. It is situated right on Zelný trh, and my partner and I have a very personal connection to it.

Nevertheless, I’ll try to write this review as objectively as possible.

Before Christmas, we stayed in the spacious corner Junior Suite with a balcony; in the summer, we returned to the unique three-storey Onyx Tower Suite.

What is Grandezza really like, and does the hotel’s quality match the prices, which can rise quite high during the most popular periods?

Is staying at Grandezza worth it?

The Grandezza has a superb location right in the centre, beautiful views, spacious rooms and excellent service.

The hotel really comes into its own as a whole. The historic building, its location right on the Green Market and the spaciousness of the rooms all combine to create a sense of an exceptional stay. However, when it comes to the finer details, the five-star standard falls slightly short.

Some of the furnishings struck me as rather old-fashioned rather than luxurious, particularly in the cheaper rooms.

In my view, the weakest link is the breakfast, which isn’t bad, but falls significantly short of that offered by similarly sized five-star hotels.

However, if you want to stay right in the historic centre and can find a room at a reasonable price, I think the Grandezza is a sensible choice.

The prices quoted correspond to our specific stays. Grandezza’s prices vary considerably depending on the dates, so it’s worth entering specific dates and comparing the different room categories.

Location right on Zelný trh

The location is one of the strongest reasons to book the Grandezza hotel.

The hotel is situated right on Zelný trh, from where you can walk to literally anywhere in the historic centre, as well as to the railway and bus stations, in just a few minutes.

Especially if you’re only visiting Brno for one or two nights, you can spend most of your time walking and not have to worry about public transport at all.

Junior Suite with a balcony

Before Christmas, we took a short trip to Moravia and spent one night in a corner Junior Suite.

We had a room with a balcony and a view in two directions. On one side we could see Květinářská Street, and on the other, a direct view of Zelný trh.

It was the view and the amount of space that were the room’s greatest assets. Especially during the Christmas markets, staying right above the historic square creates a wonderful atmosphere.

Not all Junior Suites have a balcony, so please check the exact name and description of your chosen category when booking.

A large, clean room, but something is missing

The room is truly exceptionally spacious. Grandezza has been operating in its current form since 2012, yet I found its furnishings to be a little old-fashioned in places and, in some respects, rather shabby.

The room was clean, but I felt it lacked that final touch that would have made me feel I was staying in a truly luxurious five-star hotel.

The style reminded me a little of the Plaza Hotel in New York, although Grandezza’s furnishings don’t look quite as expensive or sophisticated. On the other hand, the Junior Suite here is larger.

A beautiful, spacious bathroom

On the other hand, we really liked the bathroom a lot.

It’s large, comfortable and much more in line with what I’d expect from a five-star hotel.

You’ll particularly appreciate the ample space during a longer stay or if you’re travelling as a couple and need to get ready at the same time in the morning.

Room facilities

In the Junior Suite, we had the following at our disposal:

• a minibar
• one free litre bottle of Mattoni
• electric kettle
• a safe
• iron and ironing board
• bathrobes
• hotel slippers

The minibar prices were quite reasonable given the hotel’s category:

The coffee was a big disappointment for me. Although there is an electric kettle in the room, there’s only instant coffee.

In a five-star hotel, I would automatically expect at least a basic capsule coffee machine.

We only got one during our second stay in the Onyx Tower Suite.

Price of the Junior Suite

For one night from Saturday to Sunday, we paid 204 eur.

We stayed here during one of the busiest periods of the Christmas markets, so I thought the price was reasonable given the location, the size of the room, the balcony and the view.

However, when making a choice, I would always compare the Junior Suite with the cheaper De Luxe and Superior categories.

If the price difference is small, I think the larger room and better view are worth the extra cost. If the difference is several thousand crowns, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose a cheaper room for a normal weekend in Brno.

Onyx Tower Suite: a completely different experience

On our second stay, we stayed in the Onyx Tower Suite presidential suite.

And this is not just a larger or more luxurious hotel room. The Onyx Suite measures 95 m², spans three floors, has its own lift, two bathrooms, a separate bedroom and a turret with two panoramic balconies.

The stay cost us 516 eur . However, during peak periods, the price of the Onyx Tower Suite can be as high as 1238 eur per night.

The Onyx Tower Suite is unique, and I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a room quite like it.

Breakfast: the weakest part of the stay

Breakfast was exactly the same during both stays. Guests at the Onyx Tower Suite do not have access to any extended or special menu.

Generally speaking, breakfast at Grandezza isn’t a disaster – I certainly don’t mean to suggest that. Nothing essential is missing, and you can easily have a good meal.

However, from a large five-star hotel, I expect more than just the fulfilment of basic obligations. Quite simply, there’s nothing particularly outstanding here either.

There’s no originality, nothing typically Moravian, nothing that would make me think, ‘Wow, they’ve really gone the extra mile!’

Breakfast is a full buffet, and you’ll find all the usual classics here.

• scrambled eggs, fried eggs, hard-boiled eggs
• sausages
• a standard selection of cheeses and cold meats
• pastries
• a small selection of sweet treats
• some fruit and vegetables

If there’s a significant difference in price between a stay with and without breakfast, I’d opt for the cheaper rate without breakfast on Booking.com.

And instead of the hotel breakfast, I’d pop into Eggo, a place just a 10-minute walk away, where I reckon they make the best bacon in the world. Change my mind (you won’t manage it!)

Free gym

The fitness centre is available free of charge to hotel guests and is open 24 hours a day.

You’ll also find a changing room, towels, water and lockers. The facilities are adequate for a standard workout during a short stay.

Parking and valet service

Standard cars are not permitted to drive directly into Zelný trh. If you book hotel parking, Grandezza will send you a Guest Card with entry authorisation before your arrival.

During our first stay, when we were in the Junior Suite, we didn’t actually drive up to the hotel.

We reckoned that during the Christmas markets at Zelný trh it would just be too much of a hassle, so we parked in front of the Mahen Theatre in a paid on-street car park.

That’s why I’ve included detailed information in the review of the Onyx Tower Suite, where we did make use of the valet service.

The service is five-star standard

Whilst I had a few reservations about the facilities in the Junior Suite or the breakfast, I believe the staff and communication are of a five-star standard.

Communication ahead of our second stay was flawless. The hotel had prepared the bouquet we’d ordered in advance, and we also found a chilled bottle of sparkling wine in our room as a gesture of goodwill.

In the evening, we were also offered an evening cleaning and turndown service. We declined the service altogether, but the chambermaid at least brought us two small Lindt chocolates. A small but lovely touch.

Check-in, reception and the valet service all ran just as smoothly.

Which room would I choose next time?

For a typical weekend in Brno, I’d first compare the prices of the Superior and Junior Suite rooms.

I’d particularly recommend the Junior Suite if:

• you want a large room
• you value the view
• you can find a room with a balcony
• the price difference compared to cheaper rooms isn’t too great

I’d choose the Onyx Tower Suite for an anniversary, an engagement or any other occasion where the accommodation itself is meant to be one of the main highlights.

Conclusion: would we stay there again?

Yes, but I’d choose based on the price of the specific room.

The Grandezza probably has the best location of all the hotels in Brno if you want to stay in the historic centre.

It has spacious rooms, stunning views and staff who, during our stay, behaved exactly as I would expect from a five-star hotel.

For 204 eur during the Christmas markets, the Junior Suite made perfect sense.

I wouldn’t pay 516 eur for the Onyx Tower Suite a second time on every visit to Brno, but as a one-off experience, I felt the price was reasonable. It’s simply a unique room and a one-of-a-kind experience.

I’d just skip the hotel breakfast next time and head back to Egga. Naturally. For the best bacon in the world.
