Remuh Synagogue

Remuh Synagogue

You could easily walk right past the Remuh Synagogue without noticing it whilst strolling down Szeroka Street.

It is small and rather unassuming from the outside, but inside you will find one of the most authentic places in the whole of Kazimierz: a synagogue that is still in use, with an old Jewish cemetery right behind it.

Don’t expect a large museum or a lavish interior. The main attraction of a visit is the atmosphere of the place, which, unlike most of the surrounding synagogues, still serves its original purpose.

The synagogue and the old Jewish cemetery

The synagogue was built in the 16th century for the eminent Kraków rabbi Moses Isserles, known by the acronym Remuh. To this day, it remains the main synagogue of the Kraków Jewish community, and regular services are held here.

The interior is quite small, but well worth a visit. You will see the original late-Renaissance stone aron ha-kodesh, or Torah ark, and the reconstructed bimah used for Torah readings.

In our view, the neighbouring cemetery, founded in the mid-16th century, is even more interesting. It is one of the oldest surviving Jewish cemeteries in Europe, and here you will also find the grave of Moses Isserles, to which Jewish pilgrims from all over the world still make the journey.

Allow around 20 to 30 minutes for the whole visit. If you take a closer look at the gravestones, you could spend as long as three-quarters of an hour here.

Which synagogue to choose?

If you only want to visit one synagogue in Kazimierz, we’d recommend Remuh because of its vibrant religious tradition and the cemetery.

In terms of architecture alone, however, the recently restored Isaac’s Synagogue is more interesting.

Admission and opening hours

Official opening hours vary depending on the season:

  • summer season 10:00–18:00
  • winter season 10:00–16:00
  • Closed on Saturdays and during Jewish holidays

Admission is by way of a compulsory contribution, which covers both the synagogue and the cemetery:

  • standard contribution 15 pln
  • reduced contribution 10 pln

It is not necessary to book tickets in advance. As this is an active synagogue, access may be restricted during services or religious events.

Men must have their heads covered inside; kippahs are usually available at the entrance. It is also advisable to wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees.

How to get to the synagogue?

The synagogue is located at Szeroka 40, right in the historic centre of Kazimierz.

  • Approximately 1.4 km or a 20-minute walk from Rynek Główny
  • from the Miodowa stop: approximately 400 metres or a 5-minute walk
  • from the św. Wawrzyńca stop: approximately 450 metres or a 6-minute walk
