Where to stay in Ottawa

Ottawa

In this section you will discover our tips for places to stay in Canada's capital city. Check out the best hotels in Ottawa that we can personally recommend.

Where to stay in Ottawa

Ottawa has a small historic centre, around which most of the sights are concentrated.

Basically, there are two main areas to stay in Ottawa.

Downtown

The high-rise area around the central pedestrianised area of Sparks Street and near Parliament Hill is a great place if you're looking for a modern neighbourhood with quick walking distance to the sights and great transport links.

The Red Line underground tram runs under the entire Downtown.

Most of the cheapest accommodation around 200 cad per night offers Arc The Hotel ****.

Furthermore, there are many large hotels of multinational chains in the area, of which we would recommend the following:

ByWard Market

This neighbourhood is clearly the most popular among tourists and is located on the border of historic Ottawa and University City.

Here you will find many restaurants, bars, bistros, shops and a market.

The cheapest hotels with prices around 240 cad per night and good ratings can be found under the following names:

Right in the heart of the ByWard Market district, large hotels from well-known chains are available.

On the western edge of the ByWard Market directly across from the Parliament Buildings and the Rideau Canal is Ottawa's most famous hotel, the Fairmont Chateau Laurier 5*.

Cheap accommodation outside the city centre

Outside the centre you can find accommodation prices around 180 cad, but these hotels are not usually near public rail stations and you'll need to take less frequent buses or taxis to get downtown.

  • Ottawa Downtown Cozy Guesthouse - cheap apartments on the east side of downtown, but all rooms are only shared bathrooms
    • Transportation to downtown by bus lines 12, 15, 17 (about 15-20 minutes away)
  • Motel Du Chevalier ** - cheap motel in Gatineau
    • transport to the centre by bus lines 67, 87, 85 (approx. 25 minutes)

Hotels near stations and airports

If you're leaving Ottawa early in the morning, it may be better to stay at a hotel right by a station or airport due to poorer public transport availability and possibly longer Uber wait times, especially on Sundays.

Hotel rates and when to book

Regular rates at a 4-star well-rated hotel range between 200 cad and 280 cad per night in a double room.

As Ottawa is not so much a tourist city, prices are not seasonal and are kept at a similar level throughout the year.

It is very common for prices to drop as the travel date approaches, as hotels do not always fill to capacity.

We recommend booking your hotel 2-3 months in advance with the option to cancel for free and keep checking for price reductions.
