Early morning departure from Fiumicino Airport: a taxi, the first bus, or a night near the airport?

Terminal 3

A 6.05 am departure from Rome seems quite harmless when you book your ticket. It’s only later that you realise you should be at the airport around 4.30 am.

The first Leonardo Express train leaves Termini station at 4.50 am and arrives at the airport at 5.22 am.

For a 7.00 am flight, this is usually no problem. For a 6.45 am departure, it’s already quite tight, and I wouldn’t risk it for a flight leaving before 6.20 am.

It might be wiser to take the first bus or a taxi, or to stay near the airport on your last night. It mainly depends on your departure time, the location of your hotel, and whether you’re checking in luggage.

In this article, I do not cover all transport operators, prices or stops. You’ll find these in a separate section on Transport from Fiumicino Airport. Here, I’m simply discussing which option I would choose for a morning departure.

What to choose depending on your departure time

Departure time What I would choose
before 6:00 a hotel near the airport, the first morning bus or a taxi
6.00–6.30 the first morning bus, or a taxi if necessary
6.30–7.00 morning buses
7:00–7:30 The first train may be sufficient, but it depends on your luggage and the airline’s requirements
after 7:30 The first train or a morning bus are usually fine

Flying at around 6:00? You won’t make it in time on the first morning train

The peak period for Ryanair and Wizz Air departures is between 5:55 and 6:10.

The first morning train doesn’t arrive at the airport until 5.22, so you basically have just three options.

1. The morning bus

You can reach all departures via express shuttle buses, all of which run from Termini railway station.

The current times for the first buses are as follows. We recommend buying your ticket online in advance to be 100% sure of a seat.

Prices are virtually the same across all operators and cost around 7 eur one way.

Departure from Termini Arrival at FCO Online booking
3:30 4:10 tambus.it
3:40 4:25 terravision.eu
3:45 4:30 tambus.it
3:50 4:35 terravision.eu

Transport this early in the morning is hassle-free and buses usually run on time.

From 4:00, buses run even more frequently, so you’ll have no trouble catching a bus for flights departing between 6:00 and 7:00.

If you’re taking the bus, however, we recommend staying near Termini station (at least for your last night).

For example, the Rossi Hotel ** is located directly opposite the bus stops.

2. Taxi: it might be worth it if there are two of you

The safest option is, of course, a taxi.

The good news is that in Rome there are flat-rate fares to the airport: 55 eur from anywhere in the city centre.

The downside is that early morning flights from Fiumicino are mainly low-cost carriers, so it’s quite possible you’d end up paying more for a taxi to the airport than for your flight ticket.

Uber isn’t much help in Rome either; the prices are very similar to those of taxis.

Spending the night in the terminal

Fiumicino Airport is open 24/7, but there aren’t any comfortable places to stay there.

Personally, I definitely wouldn’t spend the night at the airport. You won’t get any sleep.

Airport hotels: When do they make sense?

There are only two hotels right next to the terminals, and their rates per night usually exceed 250 eur:

Given the high prices, I don’t think hotels near the airport make much sense. It’s an even worse situation than with taxis.

What would I choose?

Travelling alone with a rucksack:the first Terravision or T.A.M. buses in the morning .

As a couple: the first Terravision or T.A.M. buses in the morning, provided we were staying near Termini. Otherwise, a taxi straight from the hotel.

With a family, suitcases or before a long-haul flight: a hotel right by the terminal, or a taxi if necessary.

I wouldn’t even consider the first train for a flight around 6:00. It doesn’t arrive at the airport until you should already be through security and heading for the gate.

What not to forget the evening before departure

Before going to bed, make sure to:

  • check your departure terminal (though at Fiumicino, they’re both right next to each other, a 3-minute walk)
  • complete online check-in
  • check the baggage drop-off deadline
  • book a taxi or a bus ticket

An early morning departure from Fiumicino is no problem if you plan ahead.

The problem arises when, the evening before your trip, you realise that the first train leaves almost an hour before your flight.
