Getting from Durban Airport

Most travellers choose to use taxis or the Bolt and Uber mobile apps to get to Durban city centre.
Public transport is only provided by small shuttle vans "Air Bus". There are no regular city buses or trains to Durban Airport.
Taxis and the Bolt / Uber mobile app
To get to downtown Durban, we recommend using the Uber or Bolt apps, which are very popular and safe in South Africa.
Both Uber and Bolt have 24/7 availability of cars at the airport and in the city.
While regular taxis are officially metered, especially on the way to the airport, it can be easy for a taxi driver to negotiate an individual price that's unfavourable to you.
The drive to Durban city centre takes 35-70 minutes depending on the current traffic situation.
How to book a taxi?
The most commonly used apps are Uber (available at uber.com) or Bolt (available at bolt.eu).
You should ideally book your car after exiting the airport concourse. Waiting time is usually 5-10 minutes. If you don't want to spend time buying a local sim card upon arrival, purchase an electronic sim card before you fly to South Africa without worrying about airalo.com.
Where are the taxi ranks and mobile apps?
The official taxis have a counter right in the arrivals hall and a stand right outside the arrivals hall.
The Uber and Bolt mobile apps stop in the basement of the car park to the left of the terminal (Level -1). e-hailing.
Taxi prices
Pricing on the Uber and Bolt apps is dynamic and depends on demand. Here are examples of average fares to the central beach area of Durban
- Uber / Bolt - from 200 zar (Bolt is usually cheaper)
- Taxi - from 350 zar

Car rental
If Durban Airport is your starting point for a tour of the South African coast, rent a car right at the terminal.
Many multinational and local rental companies have a branch here, and weekly rental rates start at around 110 usd.
One-way rental rates are also good (return the car at another airport - Port Elizabeth or Cape Town, for example). For a 14-day rental, pay from 350 usd.
The car rental counters are located under the bridge on the left immediately next to the terminal.
Public transport - shuttle vans
There are no standard buses to Durban Airport, but you can use the shuttle company "Air-Bus".
The shuttle bus stop is located to the right of the arrivals hall near the taxi stand.
However, buses do not run according to a timetable and must be booked in advance. Contacts are only listed on the official Facebook profile.
The price to central Durban is around 120 zar per person. So if you're travelling with more people, it's usually more worthwhile to take Bolt or Uber.
